Iyad Alzaharnah

Director of KFUPM Innovation Center


​Dr. Iyad Alzaharnah is the Director of KFUPM Innovation Center. He completed his Bachelor and Master degrees in mechanical engineering sciences from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering of Dublin City University. His research profile shows he has 60 published journal and conference papers in different fields of engineering and physical sciences. Also, he has one coauthored book and one US patent. In 2011, he spent two months of internship with the Technology Licensing Office of MIT.  Since 2006, he has been involved with a KFUPM team in establishing Dhahran Techno-Valley (DTV) at KFUPM campus. In 2008, he became director of KFUPM Innovation Center and since then he has been working on building KFUPM innovation and technology transfer capacities.  He formulated a "Model for University Innovation" and presented it at the International XX ISPIM 2009 conference ("The Future of Innovation"). His other activities included developing plans for creating efficient mechanisms for joint R&D interactions between KFUPM and the R&D centers of the multinational corporations of DTV. In this regard, he presented a paper in 2011 at the 9th Triple Helix International Conference (organized by Stanford University) titled: "Aspects of Efficient University-Industry R&D Interaction and the Importance of Collaborative R&D". In year 2012, he co-authored an analytical chapter that was published in the Global Innovation Index titled: "Academia-Industry Innovation Linkages in the Case of Saudi Arabia: Developing a University-Industry Triple-Helix Framework to Promote Research and Development Collaboration". In 2014, he wrote an article titled "Dhahran Techno Valley (DTV) – Strategic Venue for Knowledge Creation and New Technologies" and presented it at the 2014 Gulf Research Workshops (organized annually by Cambridge University)".
